Abstract
Twenty four patients with hypertension of mild to severe degree were treated with propranolol for 8 to 86 days (average 26 days) at National Medical Center and following results were obtained.
1) The observed patients were composed of 19 patients with essential hypertension and 5 patients with renal hypertension. The ratio of male to female was 1:1.2 and ages of the patients ranged between 19 and 69 years.
2) The final doses of propranolol per day ranged from 60 mg to 320 mg with average of 120 mg.
3) In 63% of the patients, a supine end standing diastolic pressure below 100 mmHg was achieved. Among patients who received the propanolol as the safe hypotensive drugs, 9 patients 69% has shown supine and standing diastolic pressure below 100 mmHg. Most of poor results were obtained in patients with hypertension associated with chronic renal disease.
4) Mean blood pressures were brought down by 20 mmHg in the group treated with pranolol only, 21 mmHg in the group treated with propanolol plus aldomet or reserpine.
5) The groom treated solely with propranolol did not show postural hypotension with other group treated with propranolol plus aid met or reserpine showed significant fall in blood pressure in upright position.
6) Possible side effects with propanolol such as heart failure and bronchial asthma were not observed but minor side effects attributable to propranolol were observed in following number of patients.
Nausea in 6, dizziness in 4, tiredness in 3, insomnia in 2, dyspnea in 1 and depression in 1 patient respectively.
